Our first week is over.
We finished all the assignments.
Reading is hard.
Up until now everything has come so easy for a certain little girl. I'm not sure how she thought she would learn to read, but this wasn't what she planned. We had a couple of rough days with reading. She's very obstinate that she will NOT for any reason sound a word out.
So reluctantly, I would say the individual sounds and she would say the word. This went on for two or three lessons. I was beginning not to like reading all that much because trying to get her to do something she didn't want to do and would not do, is tiring.
She informed me that I didn't sound out words, therefore, she wasn't either. What!!??? Yes, I do. Hello, you just never notice. When reading some of the less common Biblical names or places, I have to sound them out. She's heard plenty of sounding out. She just doesn't notice. Well, guess who started noticing? And finally, guess who started sounding out words?
When she first told me she wasn't sounding out the words, I was shocked. Usually, this doesn't happen. My child defying me? She's usually pretty easy going and compliant. By this time, I was running low on patience and simply told her, "Ya, well good luck with that. Nobody can memorize every word in the English language. But you can try all you want. I'm not helping you memorize though." She said nothing.
The next day, she was sounding out those words. She's so funny and so very cute. She sounds them out so quietly. I don't care how she sounds them out. Whatever works.
A few days after she decided to start sounding out words, we were reading a chapter from The Boxcar Children. Lucky me got to read about Jessie teaching Benny how to read. How to read by memorizing words. Thanks Jessie. I know that whole language has come and gone and probably was a popular way of teaching reading during this time period but I didn't really need this. Not the best timing. Luckily, there were no set backs.
Each day gets a little bit easier.
